AFO (Ankle Foot Orthoses)

An AFO is worn to help combat a number of different conditions. It extends from the heel, around the ankle and up the back of the leg. The different types of AFO's available means the level of support varies between each type - some may appear nothing more than a strap whereas others look to be far more closed in. All offer support and comfort though, helping to correct the foot and ankle position to a more natural stance and helping to stop the strain on the ligaments due to an unnatural position.

AFO's are also known as Foot Braces. They help to correct conditions such as foot drop by holding the foot in a better position than what the wearer can manage naturally on their own. They are usually made from a form of plastic to be able to supply the support and rigidity needed to hold the limbs in position when being worn.
