Hallux Rigidus

Treating Hallux Rigidus

If you’ve found your big toe not acting as well as it once did, you may be suffering from Hallux Rigidus, also known as arthritis of the big toe joint. The condition is unlikely to come as a surprise as it is preceded by Hallux Limitus, neither should you let it worry you to any great degree – it is the second most common arthritic condition of the foot after bunions.

Running with Hallux Rigidus

Hurting heel? Aching arches? Tortured toes? The last thing you probably want to do when any of these conditions start to plague your feet is to take on a heavy run, but if you’ve found yourself dealing with a case of Hallux Rigidus then putting off running until the condition get’s better means you can think about hanging up your running shoes for good!

What is Hallux Limitus?

Hallux Limitus may sound complicated, but to put it in slightly simpler terms, it’s the early stages of what eventually becomes arthritis of the big toe or Hallux Rigidus. The condition directly affects the functionality of the joint of the big toe and, as the name suggests, limits the toe’s range of motion.

Causes of Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus is arthritis of the big toe joint. It causes the big toe joint to become stiff and rigid and usually causes the area to become quite painful and swollen. There is no easy fix for hallux rigidus, and there’s no one singular cause. In fact, the direct cause of it isn’t known, although there are some things which can contribute to it.

Exercises for Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus is arthritis of the main joint of the big toe. It causes the big to become stiff and painful because the toe cannot bend as much as it should. There’s no definitive cause, and there’s no easy cure for it. However, exercising your big toe can help relieve the pain and other symptoms it can bring.
