What is Leg Length Discrepancy?

Leg Length Discrepancy refers to the difference in length between a persons legs. Whilst most people have legs that are slightly different lengths, this becomes a problem when the discrepancy is noticeable and painful.

So what exactly causes leg length discrepancy and what orthotic treatments are available to combat it? We've put together this handy guide to help you find out.

What Does Our Guide Cover?

What Is Leg Length Discrepancy?

Unfortunately, one persons legs can vary greatly in terms of length, either due to a congenital defect present from birth or because of the bone and cartilage erosion that occurs following hip replacement surgery.

What Causes Leg Length Discrepancy?

A discrepancy or difference in length can be present from birth due to a slight difference in the alignment of your hips, or it can develop over time due to wear and tear on the pelvis. Alternatively, you may find that you have developed leg length discrepancy following an operation or hip replacement surgery due to the erosion of bone or cartilage on one side of the body.

Heel Lifts for Leg Length Discrepancy

Heel Lifts are the most common type of orthotics offered for the in-shoe correction of Leg Length Discrepancy.  Heel lifts are usually either sold in a variety in heights to suit your needs or as adjustable, peel-away inserts that allow you to exactly match the height to your leg.

Did You Know?

  • More than 50% of people have a subtle difference in the length of their legs
  • A discrepancy in leg length can be caused by an operation like a hip replacement
  • Orthotics and heel lifts can have an instant impact combatting pain
  • Some people are simply born with a discrepancy due to unaligned hips

How Severe Can Leg Length Discrepancy Get?

A severe case of LLD can mean the little leg is so far behind the big leg that the in-shoe equivalent of standing on a box would need to be implemented. This is most common among children who display the symptoms early.

For most people, a minor discrepancy can be treated using a heel lift or adjustable insole.

I have 15mm heel lifts. Which are the best insoles to put in your shoe to go with these? I feel heel pain not a great deal but some cushioning would be great.
